Deciding to get married is a big step for anyone, it’s not an easy thing. It’s something that requires constant work and willingness from both individuals to work on personal quirks to make life better for their significant other. You have to keep in mind that you are sharing space with someone that you never lived with before, so this itself can be an issue. It is very important to sit down and discuss marriage from a religious perspective so that you understand what your role is and how to execute it. The term “counseling” sometimes can be understood to mean that it’s used to “fix” a broken marriage, but it’s not. Counseling is more like coaching, if you’ve never been married and don’t have the right mindset as to how do you approach or handle day to day life with your significant other and are left to figure it out on your own, that’s when problems can occur.
Make the right decision by seeking pre-marital counseling whether it’s with us or your local Masjid, it really is the best choice you can make before making a huge commitment like marriage.
For those brothers who are marrying a Christian or Jewish woman, which is lawful under Sharia for a Muslim man to do, I strongly urge you to bring that future significant other and seek counseling. It is very important for you to know what her rights are and for her to know what your rights are. There will come a time where children will be involved and it is very important to be aware of the ups and downs of such a marriage. I don’t want to sound negative, but statistically this is a tough situation that needs careful and delicate approach.
